Granado Espada: Chapter I

Every so often I like to dabble in some online MMORPG hell-raising. The last year or so, living in the ‘Mac realm’ has put a halt to such indulgences. It’s not exactly a MMORPG friendly platform, and that’s fine, I still love it. There hasn’t been a huge influx of titles I had really wanted to play anyway, Aion is still coming soon as far as I know. One of the last addictions I experienced was called Granado Espada, also known as Sword of the New World for EU/US audiences. As far as originality goes with these online titles, Granado stands above the rest of them. Gone are the days of just controlling a single avatar, oh yes, now you’re in full control of three characters at once! Don’t worry, this is nowhere near as daunting as it first sounds. The controls are extremely intuitive and smooth. One could sit back in a semi-automatic AI if just starting out, the more experienced among us can dive right in and control each character manually should the need arise.

Aesthetically, Granado Espada is amazing. I would imagine the game setting itself to be quite the gamble for Hakkyu Kim, Granado creator and CEO of IMC Games, who opted for a classic Baroque Europe instead of the over used ‘Dungeons & Dragon-esque’ worlds. Everything looks incredible, and that’s pretty much why I stopped playing a year ago. It was pure blasphemy to run something like Granado on a low-resolution with the detail settings all the way down. I’ve bitten the bullet and retired the old trusty MacbookPro, enter now - the PC gaming rig. Dual cores of pure Intel grunt, slick and tacky cross-bred parts from a multitude of different vendors. Oh how she purrs! Let me put this into perspective; Granado Espada. 30-inch display. 2560 x 1600 pixels of resolution. Full detail settings. Enough said. No junkie could kick this addiction…

Check out Granado Espada for yourself and join the fun. It’s free to play! Feel free to abuse me on the Vivaldi server.

Hey big GoDaddy

After careful research and deliberation, I’ve found a new virtual hosting service for all of my domains. As we’re based in Australia the choice could seem a little strange, but choosing the US giant GoDaddy has so far been fairly pain free, except for a nasty surprise that they limit their SMTP relays to 1,000 per day. Normally that’s not an issue, but when you’re forwarding 10+ domain emails to a personal Gmail address, 1,000 doesn’t last long. In the end, the support team ask some ridiculous questions and you swear to not send out spam. Voila, new limit, 5,000!! We’re very happy for the moment at the quality of service and performance GoDaddy are providing. I assure you, the decision had nothing to do with GoDaddy’s ‘Candice Michelle’ marketing…

Grand Theft Awesome

Hate to add to the epic record of great reviews for the Rockstar epic Grand Theft Auto IV; but as a long long time fan (since GTA1), I’ve always anticipated each GTA release with a sense of nostalgia and anticipation. I don’t see myself as a particular violent or abrasive individual, but the GTA series always finds a way for myself to indulge in the most sinister of past times. More than that, GTA, especially the original GTA III, truly presented a visual narrative which compared to the biggest of budget motion pictures. Sure, the reality of this premise is a long way off yet, but unlike any other interactive title, Grand Theft Auto had remained the pinnacle. No worse could be mentioned of the latest installment of the GTA franchise, that is, Grand Theft Auto IV. With its brilliant soundtrack, breath-taking visuals and truly epic attention to detail - I am in AWE.

From rustling leaves behind a garbage bin to the pulsating digital interference of a mobile phone on an analogue speaker system, the guys at Rockstar have spared no expense in recreating the mundane. I’m sure you’re then in one way or another asking “what this means to you?”. I could sit here and link countless reviews and reasons for you understand what I’m talking about, but instead, I end it here with the pure gamer bond, that you WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED by your purchase of this game. Check it out Comrade!

After a long five-month hibernation, we’re back. This time with more contributors, more varied content and wittier post titles - that’s right, we’re bigger and badder than before. Our latest project at work, Webarena, has taken off very nicely resulting in a move of premises to accommodate our expanding staff requirement. Between ‘the move’ and bludgeoning helpless people in GTAIV there should be heaps of time for updates. Long overdue are the bug fixies for this site in IE6… Oh hell, they can wait a bit longer.

It’s 9:30pm new years eve, right before I’m about to head out to a night that could well take me anywhere. All I can do is reflect, with a bottle of 12 year old Jameson at my side, on the year that was. I don’t think anyone is where they wanted to end up after the year but a lot of us can be content with how we’ve acted, what we’ve accomplished and most importantly, what fun we had. As the big 08 rolls in we all think what possibilities lay in store for us, on behalf of me - and this dodgey site about nothing, may all your possibilities become realities. Welcome to the year 2008 ladies and gentlemen! Oh, and yeah I know this post as it stands doesn’t belong to a category so I’m going to throw in a Karima Adebibe wallpaper by someone, god knows who - I’m too drunk to care at the moment.
It’s hardly news I know, but what IS news is the announcement of the new Tomb Raider Underworld (yawn). Yep, Lara’s once again putting on her short shorts and pulling up her boots, the game promises to have much more ‘next-gen’ environments resembling something not unlike Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune by the looks of it. Let’s be honest though, it’s still a Tomb Raider game, and sure I’ll probably end up buying it anyway - please don’t let it suck ‘too’ much. What’s much more interesting than the actual game itself is the stunning promotional model for Lara, none other than Miss Karima Adebibe. I’m sure you’ll find Karima more entertaining. (HD)

Mass Effect, GOTY Awards 2007

It’s that time of year when the best games of the year duke it out for supremacy. Unfortunately, there is no definitive award for the medium and instead relies upon various corporations and sites to make their own. In the end it comes down to trust, and personally out of all the online and TV reviewers out there, the one that stands out from the rest to myself is Gametrailers.com. To each their own I guess. There was some pretty stiff competition this year, a great sign the industry is headed in the right direction. I’m happy to report though a game I felt really deserved a win took out the best RPG category. Yes, none other than Mass Effect for the 360. For those who have played it I’m sure you would agree that the attention to detail and raw atmosphere was spectacular, those who haven’t played it and like ‘choose your own adventures’ I urge you to get a copy or borrow from a mate, you wont be sorry. Congratulations Bioware, thanks for a fantastic gaming experience this year. The other big winners this year, Portal & Bioshock. Check out the rest of the categories here.

The heat in Perth, WA recently has been insane! I’m pretty sure they clocked it at 44.2°C just a day ago, consequently our trusty as hell air conditioner at work shat itself once again. The guys were investigating some temperature monitoring tools to install into the server room for when there may not be any staff around to notice. A friend of ours recommended this product which looks awesome! The company is called => Equals Greater Than. I’m only mentioning it as it turns out they’re also from Perth. Read all about this cool product.

Don’t get me started about Guitar Hero, I’m sure you’ve got heaps of better things to do than hear me complain at the mastery some people may have spending time playing a REAL guitar instead of a plastic toy (sorry, I couldn’t let it die). Anyway, hope you all had a kickass Christmas - I know I did. To celebrate, here’s what I mean about what kids could really be capable of with the right stimuli.
I work creating websites for clients every day, I love it, I couldn’t imaging myself doing anything else. But, I’m constantly pulling my hair over optimising all my sites for the piece of garbage that is ‘Internet Explorer 6’. I’m quite aware of all the existing rants on the net already about this - I think it’s only really started to annoy me over the holidays as my test bed is pretty much only Safari and Firefox as I’m now developing on Mac. You know what, screw this rant, I’m not going to optimise this site for IE6. For those of you using it, you might be able to read this site but you’re missing out on all the bells and whistles (I’ve done that on purpose). For the love of god, PLEASE go and get yourself a real browser, heck, you can even upgrade to IE7 for all I care. I’m tired of my job taking twice as long just because I’ve got to deal with hacks & workarounds for this piece of junk browser. Trust me, you’ll be a whole lot happier. Once upgraded, you don’t have to kiss my ass, you’ll have Ms Evangeline Lilly‘s (the chick from Lost) instead. Please people. Think of the asses… Oh - and Merry Christmas to all those using a real browser! (UHD)
